The Green New Deal: Visionary or Misguided

On Monday October 21, I had the pleasure of attending a very thought provoking discussion on the Green New Deal. It was hosted by The Richman Center at Columbia University.

The conference focused on five areas:

  • Economic Security

  • Energy & The Environment

  • Government Debt

  • Healthcare

  • Higher Education

My take aways were:

  1. The goals of the Green New Deal appear, broadly very meaningful. However, some goals were challenged and there were concerns raised of unintended consequences pursuing certain goals.

  2. The specific steps to implementation were vigorously discussed. Suffice to say, there is in each case more than one way to approach the goal. The question arises as to what can be politically achieved. And of course the coordinating issue, and quite important question of how to fund the various initiatives.

  3. Perhaps most impressive was the serious and sincere discussions held on each topic. Views certainly differed, but respect and consideration was given to and by all parties. This may be the most important take away, as is it would seem to be the approach that will actually ultimately allow us to tackle these tough topics.
